Manila’s ‘Hidden Garden’ a secret no more

You wouldn’t believe it used to be a dump and parking space.

A new park just opened in Manila this week, and it offers an accessible respite for city dwellers hungry for an open and safe space after a year of being mostly locked down in their homes because of the pandemic.

The city government on Tuesday opened the Hidden Garden in Lawton, Manila, yet another phase in its continuing effort to restore the beauty of the capital city. It followed the cleanup and rehabilitation of the Andres Bonifacio Shrine, which had long been neglected, and the restoration of the once dingy Lagusnilad Underpass.

Adjacent to the Bonifacio Shrine, the garden, which was once filled with trash, was restored as part of the city government’s plan to give the public more spaces to visit and relax. The park features a coffee shop with modern design comparable to expensive brand-name coffee places around the city.

“All over ‘yung pocket gardens, so meron silang libreng pasyalan…  Ito ‘pag weekend meron tayong maliit na coffee shop, breakfast sila dito ng weekends, so may mapupuntahan mga tao, dinadagdagan natin mga mapupuntahan ng public,” City Engineer Armand Andres said in a video posted on the Manila Public Information Office’s Facebook page.
