Hit-and-run suspect seeks forgiveness over nurse's death

The driver involved in the hit-and-run incident that resulted into the death of a medical frontliner has surrendered to the office of Manila City Mayor Francisco 'Isko Moreno' Domagoso.

The Manila Police District (MPD) identified the suspect as Mohamad Ali Sulaiman, who was driving a black Mitsubishi Pick-up with plate number NEK 1332 during the hit-and-run incident at 7:15 pm on August 23, 2020 that killed a nurse who was identified as Renz Jayson Perez.

Sulaiman was accompanied by his sister and vehicle owner, Sauda Bacaye, together with Atty. William F. Delos Santos and Metro Manila Muslim Community for Justice and Peace chairman Datu Basher 'Bong' Alonto.

During a meeting with the Mayor which was broadcast live on Facebook, Sulaiman asked for forgiveness as he admitted that he was the driver of the black pick-up vehicle in the accident.

"Gusto ko lang pong humingi ng kapatawaran sa nagawa kong aksidente at ako'y hindi muna lumitaw dahil ako'y nadala ng aking takot at ko'y maghahanap muna ng malalapitan na pwedeng tumulong katulad ni Bong Alonto at siya 'yung naging [tulay sa] pagpunta kay Mayor," Sulaiman said.

"Humihingi po ako ng paumanhin, kapatawaran sa nagawa kong aksidente. Sana mapatawad niyo ako sa aking mga kasalanan," the suspect said.

The Manila City Mayor assured the Perez's family, Sulaiman and the public of due process as the suspect will face charges for reckless imprudence resulting into homicide.

"Ang hustisya naman ay nakapiring. Mabibigyan ka ng pagkakataon na makapagpaliwanag sa mata ng batas. Ikaw naman ay may abogado," Domagoso told Sulaiman.

"Maraming salamat sa'yo at luminaw ang isipan mo na harapin na lamang kung ano ang magiging ending o magiging hatol sa'yo ng pagkakataon," the Mayor said.

He also asked Bacaye, the owner of the black pick-up, to take responsibility even as she was not the driver of the vehicle during the accident.

"Mayroon lang akong pakiusap doon sa may-ari ng sasakyan. Maging takdang aral sa atin ito sa pagpapahiram ng sasakyan, dahil I think your lawyer will agree with me that there is some level of responsobility as the owner," Domagoso said.

"Ang pakiusap ko lang kung pupwede, sana matulungan niyo yung pamilya ng naulila. 'Yun ang pakiusap ko sa inyo. 'Yung hustisya naman kakaharapin naman ni (Solaiman) iyon," the Mayor said.
